With sadness and in celebration of a wonderful life, we announce the peaceful death of Agnes Dever, 86, after a brief illness, on August 28, 2017, in the comfort of Lisaard House in Cambridge.

Champion and cheerleader of her children Michael, Mary (John), Marty (Ryan), and Kathryn (Michael). Treasured Grandma of Andrea and Sarah.

Devoted sister to Mary Geng and Frank Geng (Joyce), Agnes is now reunited with her parents, Nicholas and Veronica Geng, and her brothers Albert (Jane) and Norman (Carol). She's also remembered by her niece Lori Geng.

Agnes enjoyed her career, especially her roles at St. Joseph’s and St. Mary’s hospitals.  Throughout her long life, Agnes modeled the importance of giving back to her community. She was a lifelong volunteer with special fondness for contributing to the Victoria School Centre and Downtown Community Centre until early 2017. Agnes loved live concerts, local theatre, day trips, and the challenge of the daily crossword.

We’ll honour her memory by keeping her compassion, kindness, and welcoming spirit alive. She had a wonderful ability to find common ground with everyone she met, and was always ready with a smile and a friendly word.

Thanks to the caring 5th Floor team at St. Mary’s Hospital, and heartfelt gratitude to the extraordinary staff and volunteers at Lisaard House. Agnes and her family appreciate each of you for your loving care.

As she wished, cremation, interment, and a small family memorial have taken place. To honour her memory and to help other families, please consider a donation to Lisaard House.

"See you later, alligator."

Although we will have our memories of Agnes as a reminder and comfort, part us is now missing and will never be replaced. Agnes: you were the best example in our lives of pure openness of heart and we love you like our own. I imagine Nuka is there with you now, sitting for her treat!

Dear Dever family, I have such fond memories of your mom, especially her great smile and wonderful laugh. She was always so kind and welcoming to me. I hope you have some comfort in many wonderful memories of her. With deep sympathy, Janet

To Agnes's Children and family...my heart felt Sympathies to you all. I knew your mother from Happy Hoofers...we walked many km's on happy trails together. I tried to call your mom in June/ July with no luck. Your mother was so kind to everyone. Your mother always looked so much younger than she was. She I dearly missed by all. I'm so glad I've known her for many years. Sincerely Rose

I am really not sure what to say here that will express my gratitude for the chance to have Agnes Dever as a Mother in Law for 17 years. She welcomed me to the family and was always so sweet to me. I never heard her say an unkind word in all of the time I knew her. She may have thought them, but she was too gracious to actually say them out loud (that I heard anyway). She was the best Grandma my girls could have asked for.
In your notice in the paper, and on this site, you mentioned a celebration of a wonderful life. When losing my own mother, I found that this celebration helped us through the rough first period of mourning. Remember the funny things she said and did, and laugh about them with whoever will listen. The sad things are ok to talk about too, sometimes, as they are part of her as well. All of those things, and more, made her who she truly was.
She was a wonderful lady and will be missed by many.
