It is with both great sadness and great warmth that we announce the death of Roy Rose. Roy was the husband and lifelong (mostly silent) partner of the late Margaret Rose (September 25, 2020) for over 68 years.

Beloved father of the late Robert (Sally). Grandad to Margarette and Robert (Christy) and great Grandad to Justin, Addison and Matthew.

Very special and beloved uncle, great uncle and great, great uncle to Kathy, Colleen, Shealyn and Rynn Harrington, and Christopher and Patrick Rose. Close friend and brother to Lionel and Colleen Rose. Brother of John (deceased) and sister Jeanette Guidinger.

Roy was born in England and immigrated to Canada over 62 years ago. Margaret and he travelled often for family, mostly back home, but also Europe, Australia, Greece and the US.

He retired from BFG in 1993 after decades of working long, hard hours to support his family.

A talented woodworker his whole life, Roy created beautiful furniture, clocks and doll houses that are cherished today. Prior to immigrating, Roy was a motorcycle enthusiast, and although not an active rider in Canada, he often spoke of his journeys and bikes.

He will be sorely missed by many in the community and the home where he resided.

Sincere gratitude to the staff at Highland Place for keeping him safe and for their kindness and understanding.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Due to the pandemic a private celebration of life will be held for both Roy and Margaret when we are able.

In loving memory of a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and good friend.

(1924 - 2021)

Joan was born in Wilmslow, Cheshire, England on August 20, 1924 and passed away peacefully in her 97th year on February 23, 2021 with her daughter at her side in Kitchener, Ontario.

She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her son Roland (Vera), daughter Deborah, grandchildren Justin, Monica (Max) and Keenan, and great grandchildren, Aiden, Benjamin and Elizabeth, Oakley, Scarlett and Isla. She is predeceased by her father and mother Manuel and Doris Tutungean, sister Dorothy (Don) Monk, and husband Mike Sindia.

For family and friends, her memory  will be cherished through the many stories she told and wrote that gave life to her indomitable spirit, sense of humor and love for life, family and all things English. Joan’s stories tell of her family in England and their narrowly escaped survival in WW2, and then trace her immigration in 1949 to Canada where she and her husband took posts as crew and cook at the historic Empire Valley Ranch on the Chilcotin in B.C. Her stories carry through to her arrival to Prince George in a time when it was still like a frontier town and the pavement on George Street had not been laid or lights erected. In Prince George she met and married Mike Sindia and raised their children. She clerked at BC Hospital Insurance, then a new government agency, but took a great sense of pride in the work she did at Prince George Planing Mills where she learned to master calculating board feet of lumber. When the pulp mills opened she took a job in the pay office and later became Paymaster of Prince George and Intercontinental Pulp Mills where she worked until she retired. She was the first woman to earn this position traditionally held by men, and had to stand up for her right to a pension as a single mother and sole provider. In her retirement Joan moved to Ontario to be close to her children. A selection of her stories gained recognition when they aired on CBC Radio and received honorable mention in the National Leacock Humorous Short Story Competition, but for all that knew Joan her spirit lives on in her many wonderful stories.

Cremation has taken place and a private family memorial will be held in the future to commemorate her life.

Online messages and condolences can be made at www.legacy.com.

July 18, 1944 - February 16, 2021

By the time you read this, the Princess will have left the Castle.

Rheta wanted to thank all that came to see her over the past year.

She leaves behind her cherished husband Dennis, the four sons to which she was devoted, Scott, Brent, Jay and Kyle, and their wives, whom she loved as though they were her own daughters.
And she treasured the endless happy times with thirteen of the world’s best grandchildren.

She shared her gifts of humility and generosity with her nine beloved siblings, and a great number of nieces and nephews will remember her loving spirit.

Proud of her humble beginnings, she was always welcoming and giving.  Rheta believed that the country was the best place to raise children, and was no stranger to hard work both in her career as a homemaker and her involvement with the family businesses.

Some of her fondest memories included backyard pool parties and summer weekends at the family cottage hosting many great friends and relatives.

As her boys became more independent, she and Dennis traveled throughout the world creating great memories with loved ones.

She nurtured the joy and love of her grandchildren, and annual family gatherings at Great Wolf Lodge were enjoyed by all.

Rheta was deeply loved and her compassion will live on.

Cremation has taken place. For those wishing to express condolences through a donation, Rheta's favourite charity was Operation Smile Canada.

The family will be holding a private internment ceremony at Parkview Cemetery on Saturday.

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Maureen Topelko on February 14, 2021 at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario. Born and raised in Toronto, Maureen is pre-deceased by mother Katherine, brother Patrick, and beloved Aunt Mary Donovan. She is survived by Roy, husband of 61 years, daughters Katherine (partner Edward) and Karen (partner Jason), grandchildren Sophia and Oscar, sibling Michael, and too many wonderful cousins and friends to mention.

Throughout her life, Maureen enjoyed bringing family and friends together. She loved people and welcomed everyone into her home. Many were lucky beneficiaries of hours spent in the kitchen preparing old family favourites or newly found recipes. She was happiest getting her hands dirty in a garden and had a gift for designing beautiful flower arrangements and outdoor spaces. Maureen had a magical blend of immense creativity and technical skill, which she shared openly with others eager to learn her craft. She cultivated long lasting friendships with her colleagues and clients at the Cambridge Garden Centre, where she was generous with her time and fully committed to finding the “perfect specimens” for every gardener. Plants and pets nourished her soul, and she adored every four-legged friend that came to visit.

The family wishes to thank the dedicated doctors and nurses at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, Juravinski Hospital, the Grand River Hospital and the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network for their support. We also wish to express our deep gratitude to Maureen’s closest friends for their loving care throughout her courageous battle with cancer.

Cremation has taken place and in keeping with Maureen’s wishes, a memorial is not planned. If desired, messages and tributes may be left for the family at www.tricitycremations.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in Maureen’s memory to any animal care or rescue charity would be appreciated. Or you can simply plant a tree and watch it grow; she would love that.

Maureen was an amazing wife, mother and grandmother who loved deeply and unconditionally. Gracious, humble, witty, cheerful, intelligent, hardworking, and oh so brave, she was truly one of a kind. Maureen’s positivity, courage and strength are a legacy and her mantra to live life “one day at a time” an inspiration. Mom, enjoy your rest. You’ve earned it. Thank you, for everything.
