Joan passed, as she lived, surrounded by love, in her 87th year on Friday, February 24, 2023.
Loving wife, constant companion and soul mate of 57 years to Russell Johnson, and treasured mother to Ken (Wendy), Martin (Kerri) and Michelle (Oliver).

Joan was the daughter of Linton Laird and Iris Bartlett and stepdaughter of Arthur Lewis. Born Nov. 23, 1936 in Rodney, ON, she moved to Brant County as a child, which remained her home for the next 80 years.

Joan came from a large family as is predeceased by her siblings Don (Margaret d.), Elsie Tolhurst (Don d.), Jack (Edith d.), Ruth Bucholtz (Bill d.), Ken (Ruta), Clare (Marg), Mary Balzer (Glenn d.) Barbara Dunn (Len), and Gwen Laird. Also predeceased by her daughter in law, Beverly, grandson Jeff and brothers in law Angus (Leila d.), Andy (Verna d.) and sister in law Barb Copeland (Bob d.).

She is survived by her sister Lynn Feick (Earl d.), and her brother in law and sister in law Don and Judy Johnson.

Joan was Grandma to  12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren.

Joan had many beloved nieces and nephews. She was known in Paris as “Auntie Joan” to the scores of children she nurtured in her home daycare.

She was the recipient of the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award for Volunteerism. Joan was involved in everything from Girl Guides, to volunteering with the Stedman Hospice and the Laubach Literacy organization. An avid lover of music, her beautiful contralto voice could be heard harmonizing in various church choirs, the Brant Belle-A- Dears, and was known to instigate impromptu sing songs at Telfer Place. She also sang a lovely rendition of “I Love You, A Bushel and a Peck” to countless tiny ears.

Joan had a huge capacity for love. Until the end, she could be found listening to people’s troubles and giving them wise advice and warm hugs. She was a woman of great faith and therefore optimism. This sustained her and brought her comfort until the end.

Special friends Ruth Anne Stortz, Dorothy Neufeld (d), Helen Doctor, Glenna Huff and Brooke Parsons enriched the many chapters of her life.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Smokey Hollow Estates clubhouse on March 5, 2023 at 1 pm.

Special Thank you to the staff at Telfer Place who cared for Joan the last 18 months of her life.

Announcing the passing of David Andrew Gaskin, born November 24th, 1959 in Moncton, NB.  David passed away peacefully on February 18th, 2023, in Oshawa, ON following a short battle with kidney cancer. He is survived by his children, Vinton, Ella, Kiara, his siblings Cheryl and Mark, and his parents, Reginald and Doreen.

David grew up in Moncton, NB with his siblings and parents. They often frequented their grandfather’s farm, which is still in the family today. In 1971 they moved to Ontario for his father’s work, to the same house where his parents resided until 2019.

He worked delivering flowers in high school and later spent years working for Scarboro Movers Ltd where he met the godparents of his children, JP and Nella Dunn. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in English, and later returned to school to begin his career in fleet safety and insurance. He played football throughout High School and University.  David   later started playing hockey as well.  He worked for a few different companies throughout his career, but eventually founded Sirius Fleet Safety Ltd in 2019, an independent contracting company focused on truck and fleet safety, as well as insurance risk management. He had 35 years of fleet safety management and was incredibly passionate about his field.

Dave met his future wife, Sheryl, in 1981 at Melville Presbyterian Church. On October 15th, 1983, they had their first date, and married on the same day in 1988. They honeymooned in Niagara Falls, and in 1994 took a road trip through the West Coast of Canada and the United States. They moved a few times but ended up in New Brunswick, where they welcomed their first child, Vinton, in 1997. In 2000 they moved to Oshawa before they welcomed Ella, then had Kiara in 2002. Though they separated in 2015, David and Sheryl hold their memories very close to their heart and cherish all the years they had together.

David was passionate about many things. He was a die-hard hockey fan, specifically the Toronto Maple Leafs. He watched Hockey, football, basketball, and shared that love with his eldest, Vinton, and they often bonded over athletics through Vinton’s sports as well. He played hockey, football, baseball and more. David and Sheryl even did Karate lessons for years, gaining his brown belt in Wadō-kai Karate.

David was an avid reader, as most English majors are. Some notable favourite authors include Stephen King, Tom Clancy, Joe Hill and Dean Koontz. He loved crime novels, the supernatural horror, and historical novels, among other genres. He would often spend his time writing novels or telling those around him about ideas he had for books.

Potentially David’s biggest passion was music. He grew up often secluding to his room, listening to music and playing guitar, but would share his love for music with others. He was part of the Presbyterian Centennial Choir in his youth. David also wrote music, many songs inspired by those in his life.  After moving to Oshawa in 2000, he became a member of worship band Spirit Dot Calm, posted his music on his YouTube channel, and entered a variety of local music competitions. You would rarely catch him at family events without his guitar and playing some tunes.

He lit up every room with cheeky humour and dad jokes, while also being an introvert who loved his time alone. He would never take life too seriously and put his family and kids over anything else. He loved being on the road and often travelled for work. He loved talking about and sharing his interests with others, and everyone loved hearing about them. He was a loved man whose kindness did not go unnoticed. Words cannot describe how much he will be missed.

Memorial information is still to be determined and will be shared at a later date.

We know you're flying high in the sky, 747.

Messages and condolences may be left for the family at www.tricitycremations.com. Please visit David's obituary notice on Facebook.

Helen & William Rose

It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we announce the death of our parents, Helen Gloria Rose (nee Walsh Jakeman), (predeceased by our father, her husband Vincent of 28 years) and her husband of 34 years, William Ingham Rose. They leave behind their devoted daughters, Sharlene Cameron (Joe), Anne Marie Walsh, Sheila McDonald (Paul) and Marlene Farrugia (David); 9 grandchildren; pre-deceased by Dylan, and 17 great grandchildren.

Helen was diagnosed with Dementia, Alzheimer’s disease in 2019. She was strong until her final breath on February 8, 2023, with her daughters by her side at Sunnyside Long Term Care Home, Kitchener, ON. Bill took an unexpected demise 6 days later, on February 14, 2023, at his home in Cambridge, ON.  The family believes he passed with a broken heart.

“They were inseparable in life, nor could they be separated by death itself.” (author unknown).

Helen had an infectious laugh, the best hugs, and a stubborn streak. She was a fantastic cook and was extremely proud of her home and garden. She was a tough Mom, but she was also very loving. She put her heart and soul into everything and everyone she touched.  She was a welcomed resident of Laurel Creek and Buttonworks Neighbourhoods, at Sunnyside LTCH, where she made many friends, almost daily.

Bill was a grand storyteller, and loved watching the Toronto Blues Jays as well he was a huge fan of The Montreal Canadiens Hockey Team. He loved his step-daughters very much, and their immediate families. He was devoted to Helen, and their dog Mitzie. With two bad hips, and fluctuating blood pressure he was determined to visit Helen as often as he could.

It seemed only appropriate that Helen would call Bill to heaven to be by her side. The only time they were apart was the three years that they survived whilst Helen lived out her life at Sunnyside LTCH.

Cremation has already taken place. There will be no service however, a celebration of their lives will be held towards the end of June 2023. More details will follow.

We, the daughters, want to thank everyone for their kindness, thoughts, and prayers during this challenging time for us. We would also like to thank the staff at Sunnyside LTCH of the Laurel Creek and Buttonworks Neighbourhoods for their unconditional love and support for Mom and our family.

It is our wish, that if a donation would like to be made, please send it to The Sunnyside Foundation, in memory of Helen Rose online at www.sunnysidefoundation.ca or by phone at 519-893-8494 extension 6377.

Messages and condolences may be left at www.tricitycremations.com. Please visit Helen and William's obituary notice on Facebook.
