On March 30, 2018, our mom, Sandra Shaw, passed away peacefully at Lisaard House with her family by her side.  Mom’s battle with kidney cancer began in January 2017.  She fought every day with strength and courage until the very end, always trying to comfort us when she was the one fighting the battle. Our Mom has been the light of our life and was a unique woman who was loved by everyone who knew her. We had such an incredible bond with our mother and words cannot describe how much we loved her. We were lucky to travel the world with her and went on many trips and cruises.  Mom always believed in making memories and never putting things off and to live in the moment.

Mom is survived by her daughters Lynn Phillips (Patrick) and Chantal Chaves (Luis), and her dearest cherished friend, Denis Marcotte.  She is also survived by her four grandchildren (Joshua Chaves, Justin Chaves, Ryan Chaves and Sarah Phillips), her brother, Jim Shaw (Roseanne), Liz Sprague (Bob), Carol Shaw, her nieces Melodie Shaw and Nadine Sprague, her nephew, Kurtis Sprague, and her special Aunt Pauline Harris and other cousins, family and friends.  Sandra also leaves behind her special sister-in-law, Phyllis Pedro, and her step-sons, Dennis Carter, Tim Carter and Rodney Carter, and other family and friends in Bermuda.

Mom was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Carter, her parents, Willis and Marjorie, and her sister, Lynn.

There will be a celebration of life on Friday, April 6, 2018 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at The Royal Canadian Legion Preston Branch 126, 335 Westminister Drive, Cambridge, Ontario. Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Lisaard House, 990 Speedsville Road, Cambridge, Ontario N3H 4R6.  This amazing place brought so much peace to our dear mother and our families in the last weeks.  We wish to thank the amazing nurses, personal support workers, doctors and volunteers who provided Mom which such loving care.  Each and every one of them are angels on earth and we cannot personally thank them all, but would like to give a special mention to Elizabeth who was there to welcome Mom into Lisaard House, and who was there with us when we sent her home to our Heavenly Lord.  To all of you who cared for Mom, combed her hair, scratched her back and gave us hugs when we needed them, we truly thank you.

Mom, we know that you were greeted into welcoming arms and hope you are playing all the Quick Hit slot machines in Heaven.  We will carry you with us until we meet again.

Weep Not For Me
 By an Unknown Author

Weep not for me though I have gone
 Into that gentle night
Grieve if you will, but not for long
 Upon my soul’s sweet fight

I am at peace, my soul’s at rest
There is no need for tears
For with your love I was so blessed
 For all those many years

There is no pain, I suffer not
The fear is now all gone
Put now these things out of your thoughts
In your memory I live on

Remember not my fight for breath
 Remember not the strife
Please do not dwell upon my death
 But celebrate my life

Bill passed away peacefully in his 80th year on March 27th, 2018 with his family at his bedside.

He will be remembered with affection by his wife Jane, son David, daughter Cathy and husband Bryan Jolly, daughter Jennifer and husband David Scott, beloved granddaughter Lauren Jolly and his four-legged buddy Cody; he was a dear brother to Doreen Groff and the late Laverne Hammer.

Bill was a teacher in Cambridge for most of his career.  He taught mathematics at Southwood Secondary School until his "retirement". He then kept busy working at Beaver Lumber, Cashway and lastly, Rona.  Clearly the hardware business was in his blood, just like his father who owned Hammer Hardware in Wellesley.

For many years Bill was actively involved as an executive with the Cambridge Terriers and then the Cambridge Winter Hawks.  In his "younger years" he enjoyed playing hockey, but he also liked bowling and pitching horseshoes for which he received numerous trophies.

A special thanks to the staff of the Cambridge Memorial Hospital and Heritage Meadows for their loving care and support.

One of Bill's last wishes was that we hold a Celebration of Life in his honour; an informal gathering for family and friends.

Please drop by for this open-house event on Sunday, April 22nd, 2018, from 2-5 p.m. at "The Pines", 115 Fountain Street, Cambridge.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
