It is with great sadness that we announce that, on May 21st, 2018, our dad, Jim (James) Hertner passed away peacefully, in his 78th year, at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital. Despite his illnesses, Dad’s heart broke two weeks ago when our mom, and his wife of 50 years, Muriel Hertner, passed away. Dad was born on September 23rd, 1940, in Copenhagen, Ontario, to Vera and Tom Hertner.

He was a proud father and grandfather of Richard, Kerry Lynne, Megan, James, BrookLynne, Mitchell, and Matthew; Jason, Sherri, Faith and Ella; Ryan, Tanya, Charles and John; and Leslie, Paul and Lily. He was the brother of Jerry, Charles, (late) Ron, Betty and Mary, and the loving uncle of many nieces and nephews.

He re-created the wonderful memories from his upbringing in Copenhagen, often saying it was the best place to grow up, and he passed those memories onto his children and grandchildren during special holidays, and especially at Christmas time. We always waited to hear his common refrain at our gatherings, “It’s always fair weather when good friends get together”.

Dad was a calming presence, and a guiding voice in all our lives. He never demanded, but, instead reminded us of integrity, discipline, and duty. He firmly believed that if you start something, you finish it, which became the way that his own children and grandchildren have lived their lives.

More than anything in the world, Dad loved mom. She meant everything to him, and, he could always be heard saying, “She’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”  Though she passed two weeks ago, Mom must have called to him on the Monday morning of his death saying, “Let’s go, Jimmy, we’re out of here!” And, he likely responded, “Well, I guess I’d better go.”

Mass will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2018 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at St. Ambrose Parish, 210 South Street, Cambridge.

October 30, 1952 – May 11, 2018

After a courageous battle with cancer, in his 66th year, Warren left Lisaard House Hospice to “Ride his Harley in the sky.”

Leaving behind his wife of 39 years, Carolyn (Lengyell), daughter Heidi, son Darren (Steph), precious grandsons Brody and Lucas. Survived by his mom (99th year) Rose Rivers, his sister Karen Dill, his brother Robin Rivers and his sister-in-laws Judy (Rivers) and Heather (Lengyell). Predeceased by his dad Bruce Rivers, brother-in-laws Merv Dill and Joe Lengyell, nephew Ryan Dill, and his mother-in-law Ruth Lengyell.

In 1977 when Warren and Carolyn met, Warren had his own body shop where he did meticulous autobody work on a range of vehicles from customizing to painting. In September of 1977 with marriage and family plans, Warren started a career at Cambridge Brass (1977 – 2012). He retired at 60 years old to enjoy his family, Tim Horton’s coffee, trips to Florida with our great friend Grant and most of all, no alarm clock so he could ride his candy apple red Harley (his pride and joy) with the Delta Riders.

As per Warren’s wishes, cremation has taken place (Warren designed his own urn and plaque). There will be no funeral, but a Celebration of Life will be held in Glen Morris on June 2, 2018; the day of “Ride for Dad” which Warren and Heidi always attended. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lisaard House.

“Ride on husband, dad, pa, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and great friend.”

Nov. 7, 1923 - May 10, 2018

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Alexander Gray announce his passing at home on May 10. He was 94 years young. Alex leaves behind Mary, his wife of 73 years, daughters Jane (Tom), Joanne (Paul), son Sandy (Jane), grandchildren Scott, Chrissy, Andrew, Caitlin, Drew, Heidi, Danny and many adored great-grandchildren. He will also be greatly missed by his extended family and friends.

Born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1923, Alex grew up in Toronto but always took great pride in his Scottish roots. He was a proud WW2 veteran. He and Mary raised their children in Mississauga. Their home was always a hub of social activity.  Alex would always be found behind the rec room bar, graciously hosting family and friends. His specialties were manhattans and martinis, and creating fond memories for so many.

A loyal employee of General Motors for over 40 years, Alex spent most of his working life as Vice President of Finance at Humberview Motors in Toronto. He and Mary retired to Waterloo in 1986. They enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their vacation home in Calabash, North Carolina; in later years Alex loved nothing more than spending time at the cottage on Go Home Lake in Muskoka.

Alex derived great pleasure from his grandchildren’s sports, activities and achievements. He was their biggest fan. He leaves a legacy of love and laughter and will always be remembered for his kindhearted nature and organizational skills extraordinaire.  At his request there is no service, but a celebration of Alex's life will be held in Kitchener at a later date. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to his favourite charities -  the Food Bank of Waterloo Region or the Mennonite Central Committee.
