 (August 16, 1946 – October 26, 2020)

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of Bob Bieniarz, on Monday, October 26th.  He passed away at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, in Guelph, after an unexpectedly short battle with Cancer.

Words rarely seem adequate to express our sorrow of a wonderful person, like Bob, but we were recently comforted by a quote, shared with us from a dear friend, by A. Foley:

“The passing of a good friend, like the felling of a great pine, leaves a vacant space against the sky.”

Bob will be remembered as a writer and poet.  He was always there to lend a helping hand to whoever needed it and was keen to strike up a conversation with anyone, but you had to keep up with his quick-wit and dry sense of humour.  He was not defined by what he did for a living, but always loved what he chose to do and often found great reflection in his hobbies, writing and fishing.  While Bob had many jobs throughout his life, he most enjoyed the time he spent as a keeper at the Toronto Zoo.  This is also where he met the love of his life, Mary.

For over 40 years, Bob has been the loving husband to Mary Hamilton, and supportive and caring father to stepsons Gary (Carrie), of Guelph, and Brian, of Ottawa.  He is predeceased by his father, Alfred Bieniarz, but left to mourn, with fond memories is his mother, Julianna Urban, and the families of his brother, Gary Bieniarz with sister-in-law, Grace Elliott, his Aunt Diane, and his Aunt Wanda, all of Toronto.

Shortly before his passing, Bob shared one of his written pieces with us, which we agree provides a perfect reflective tone, to help us through this difficult time:

“There is a sanctuary to which I shall return, either in this life or the next. It displays no parallels of latitude or longitude, no harbour or anchored jetty, nor port of call. Navigation cannot mark its location on any map. A pink coral reef surrounds its shores where palm trees sway in rhythm to the salty ocean breezes. Passports are not required and Island music is the decree. There is a white sandy beach and thatched roof bar perched on the edge of a turquoise sea, where you can find an empty bar stool and someone with a story to tell.”

Written years ago, Bob always knew that he would, one day, be seeking an empty bar stool, ready to tell a story.

Memories of him will last in our hearts forever.

Fulfilling Bob’s wishes, cremation has already taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a date to be announced.  As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made, in Bob’s memory, to your local animal rescue centre. Please visit Bob's obituary notice on Facebook.

Passed away peacefully after a brief illness, on Monday, October 26th 2020 at Innisfree House in Kitchener, Ontario at the age of 83

Father of Cheryl (Al) McEwan, Donette (Al) Kolpean, Jim (Jackie) Mercer, and Jason Mercer.  Grandfather of Tristan (Jessica), Spencer, Hunter, Nicole (Patrick), Shane (Carly), Joshua (Kayla), and James.  Great-grandfather of Hazel, Dexter, Claire, Colton, Cayge, Jude, Paisley, and Jett,

Jim is also survived by his sister, Joan LeGrand, and the mother of his children, Denise Mercer.

Predeceased by his beloved wife Lorna Bernard, father James Waddell Mercer, mother Helen Shaw Mercer, brother Alexander, and sisters Helen and Barb.

Born in 1937, and raised in Galt, Ontario, Dad worked at IBM for 35 years, retiring in 1992 on
the family farm near Sheffield.  Never one to put his feet up for long, Dad kept busy gardening in the greenhouse, raising turkeys and peacocks, and breeding his beloved Shetland Cattle, and also working at Settlers Farm Supplies, in Sheffield. Dad truly loved hunting season. Those annual expeditions for deer, moose, and ducks with his friends and family were legend.  Dad or Grandpa Mercer as he was known, was proud of his children and grandchildren, and was just getting to know the next generation of great-grand kids.   He will be dearly missed.

The family is so grateful for the tender care Dad received from the staff at Innisfree House.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial gathering will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Innisfree House-Hospice would be appreciated by the family. Each donor will receive a tax receipt and a thank you letter will be sent to the family of the deceased. Messages and condolences may be left at www.tricitycremations.com or 519.267.7199.  Please visit Jim's obituary notice on Facebook.

 March 12, 1948 – October 22, 2020

On October 22, 1971 I married my soul mate. Forty-nine years later, on our anniversary day, he gave me flowers and we said good-bye.  I will miss him so much but he will  be with me forever in  my heart.

It is with heart wrenching sadness we let you know that Brian  has  ended  his seven year battle with stroke and dementia.  Now he can once  again walk, run, eat and speak.  And how can we not be glad for his freedom from  this long and difficult  illness.

Left to go on without him are his loving and devoted wife Edna (formerly Dabbs), his beautiful daughters whom he loved dearly, Tracy Lynne Fler (Paul) and their children Dawson, Ellis and Alia, and Lisa Joanne Nugent (Chris Carswell) and their children Kai, Gabe and Finlay.  Brothers Kevin Nugent (Nancy), Gerry Nugent, Sister Loretta Doyle, Sister-in-law Patricia  Nugent and Sister-in-law Beatrice Howse.  Brian was predeceased by his parents Alice and William Nugent, brother Leo Nugent, brother-in-law Gerald Doyle and by parents-in-law Alice and Edward Dabbs and brother-in-law David Howse.

Born on Bell Island Newfoundland, Brian came to Ontario when he was twelve years old and lived most of his life in Cambridge.  He was the most outgoing, friendly person you would ever meet. It didn’t seem to matter where you travelled he knew someone there.  He played some golf, liked to bowl but cars were his biggest passion.  He started his working career at Ridgehill Ford Sales and ended it with his own Brian Nugent Sales, a long held dream.  He loved his red 1969 Ford Fairlane convertible and could always be seen in various parades  or toting a bride and groom.  He was a proud and long standing member of the Knights of Columbus and  Preston  Legion.

We would like to say a special thank you to St. Andrews Terrace Cambridge and their wonderful dedicated staff (too numerous to mention) for their love and care of Brian in his four year stay there.

In this time of Covid-19 it is difficult to say good-bye in any normal fashion. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held.  A Celebration  of Life will be planned for a later date and we hope as many as possible will be able to join us and share their stories of Brian.

Donations to Heart and Stroke or Alzheimer Society appreciated. Messages and condolences may be left at www.tricitycremations.com.

This world, however beautiful
was never meant to be
The place that we would call our home
for all eternity.
And though we would not choose to leave,
a loving God knows best,
And in His time,
He lifts us to a place of peace and rest.

We met at a dance on Labour Day weekend, 1985 and Bev saved her last dance for me on October 16, 2020. {with love, Gord}

Bev left us with these written words …
“Sadly, I must inform you I have changed my address. I leave behind my loving husband Gordon; my son Chris (Lisa) Carswell, precious grandchildren Kai, Gabe & Finlay; brother Bob (Judy) Manary; extended family Mike (Kelly) Brown, Mike Jr & Kathleen; Doug (Kim) Brown, Amanda (Zach), Colin, Jessica (Scott); Rob (Lisa) Brown and twins Madison & Jacob.

Special thanks to my husband Gordon, for his love and devoted care throughout this illness. He was my rock. Gordon says he will remember what a special person I was to so many, always ready to travel, camp, go boating and skiing and that he will miss my companionship and love immensely. We were blessed with 35 wonderful years together.

Also thanks to my ‘3 musketeer’ nursing friends for their humour and endless visits, to my class of ‘65 nursing classmates who drove long distances to visit me, to my special lifetime friend Allyson and family Logan & Jocelyn, to all other friends, nurse Pat, PSWs and neighbours. They gave me many wonderful memories and their cards and texts were uplifting, consoling and helpful during a difficult time.

I worked as a Registered Nurse at Cambridge Memorial Hospital for 30 years. I loved people, enjoyed my crafts, gardening, cottage times on Christian Island and most of all, time spent with family, children and friends. I felt a great love of life.”

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will follow at a later date. Donations to the ALS Society of Canada would be appreciated.

“God saw you getting tired when a cure was not to be,
He closed His arms around you and whispered, “Come to me.”
In tears we saw you sinking, we watched you fade away,
Our hearts were almost broken, you fought so hard to stay.
But when we saw you sleeping, so peacefully free from pain,
We would not wish you back to suffer that again.
So treasure her Lord, in Your garden of rest.”
