October 22, 1922 – Dec. 21, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Schroeder, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday with his family.

Dear father of Carol Schnarr (Greg), grandfather of Melanie Walker (Tye), Laura Hamulecki (Steve), Andrew Schnarr (Cait), Katie Lloyd, and Daniel Schnarr (Megan), and great grandfather to Layna, Sierra, James, Connor and another on the way. Predeceased by his wife Judith, daughter Susan Schroeder-Lloyd, and granddaughter Amanda Lloyd.

After losing his father and 5 siblings during the war, John (of Dutch descent) immigrated from Germany to Canada to start a new life. His bride, Judith, from Austria, joined him a year later. He quickly built a successful bricklaying business in St. Catherines. At the age of 35, he followed his dream of a higher education at McMaster University, while supporting his wife and two daughters by continuing to manage his business.  He went on to become a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo, along with a doctorate in Philosophy. A specialist in molded concrete vessels, he worked closely as a consultant with the Chalk River Nuclear Power Plant near Ottawa, and also travelled to the United States and Europe to consult there as well.

Never one to give up on his dreams, and a nature lover at heart, he bought a country property at the age of 74, designed his own cabin, and proceeded to plant 100 trees by hand.  A prolific writer and reader throughout his life, he was continuing to write his life story almost to the end. We had many interesting conversations about family, which was always foremost on his mind, current events, and his most favorite topic, philosophy.

Our deepest thanks to Dr. Carothers and the exceptionally caring staff at Chartwell Westmount Long Term Care Facility, especially during his final days.

As per John’s request, cremation has taken place and a private family celebration of his life will take place after the holidays.

In lieu of flowers, donations to either the Heart & Stroke Fund, or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Messages and condolences may be left at www.tricitycremations.com. Please visit John's obituary notice on Facebook.

Passed away at Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Tuesday December 20, 2022 at the age of 70 years.

Rick will be missed by his brothers.  Randy (SherryLee), Kim (Elizabeth), and Kyle. He was predeceased by his father, James Asher Foster and his mother, Florine Mary Foster. Although Rick had several relationships during his life, he leaves behind no children.  Rick does leave behind many nieces and nephews. Kelly, Hillary (Jay), Steven (Lindsay), Zachary, Lia (Ruben), Tyler and Trinity. Rick will also be missed by many other old friends and family. His Uncle Marshall Foster, Aunt Delani Foster Parsons, Aunt Tracey Leanne Gates, Aunt Alice Opavsky, Maryann Foster, Brian Lawrence  and many other Foster, Opavsky, Cowan, Tomecek, Danforth, and Hornick relatives.

Rick was born in Chatham, Ont. and grew up in a variety of places before the family settled in the Cambridge area.  He attended Southwood High School in Galt.  Auto mechanics and body work was a big part of his life then. After graduation, Rick worked in a number of fields, but primarily in restaurant management, and other admin manager positions.  Rick travelled the world for some of these companies and liked to tell stories of his experiences.  Australia and South Africa were two of his favourite places.

Later in life, Rick resettled in Cambridge and lived a quiet life socializing with his friends and working as he wished at a variety of jobs until retirement.   Health issues began to play a part in his life and eventually left him homebound for much of his last several years, complicated by the pandemic restrictions and limitations. His condition declined quickly and Rick passed away after several weeks at Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Rick’s Life will be held in Galt at a later date. A private family gathering will be organized in the New Year.

Donations may be made to The Cancer Society, or your favourite charity, as expressions of sympathy.

Messages and condolences may be left for the family at www.tricitycremations.com or 519.772.1237. Please visit Rick's obituary notice on Facebook.

(December 22, 1941 - December 17, 2022)

On Saturday December 17, Butch lost his fight with pancreatic cancer. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Butch is survived by Muriel Fearon Spence (Toosie), his wife of 58 years, as well as his children, Jeff of Vancouver, Deanne (Peter) Telford of Cavan, and Bill of Doon; grandchildren, Sam, Jonah, Mitchell and Katie; and brothers, Ted (Miriam), and Ken. He is predeceased by his brother Bob (Isabel), and parents Tommy and Edna Spence.

Butch was born and raised in Galt, Ontario. He attended Blair, Manchester, and Lincoln Avenue Public Schools, followed by high school at Galt Collegiate Institute. He worked at Mimik Ltd. for 29 years, and then Dana Canada, until he retired in 2002. He and Muriel retired to Goderich, Ontario, where they enjoyed summers by the lake and went south for winters in Cocoa, Florida.

Butch was an avid reader, a collector of stamps and coins, and he enjoyed a good pun. His knowledge of cars was extensive, and he restored his 1931 Ford Model A that still runs today. He loved to ride his bike everyday, and he loved spending time with his family. Family trips to the east and west coasts and Caribbean cruises leave wonderful memories.

It is his wish that a private family celebration take place when the weather is warm, the skies are blue, and the sun is shining. Undoubtedly, bicycles will be involved.

Don was very grateful for his medical team, and encourages you to donate to a hospital of your choice. We would like to acknowledge Kari Johnson RNP, Dr. Kittmer, Annerieke van Beets, Dr. Thomas, and the entire team of Care Partners whose concern and kindness will never be forgotten.

Muriel (Toosie) Spence and family.
