Frank Robert Hazelton

Frank was a simple man who believed in simple things. He was born in Vancouver B.C. on July 29, 1953 to Desmond and Doreen Hazelton, and younger brother to David and John Hazelton. Frank grew up in Chilliwack, B.C. in what at the time was a rural, farming community where he spent his childhood fishing with friends, fighting with his brothers (as all brothers do) and as the youngest son, pushing the limits of his parent’s authority over himself. Frank was a true hippy at heart and left home younger than most for an adventure. He found after some time that he enjoyed working outdoors. He worked all over interior BC and the Vancouver Island Logging and working construction.

It was in Vancouver, in the late 70's when Frank met Patricia Tobin, a nurse at The Red Cross, who would very soon become the love of his life and his wife. They had one child Megan Hazelton. They eventually settled in Revelstoke, B.C. and made that town their home. In 2014 Frank joined his daughter and grandson Parker Brunetti in Ontario.

Frank Hazelton never had an easy life, by his own standards. He was a recovered drug addict, who was clean and sober for 10 years prior to being diagnosed with stage 4, untreatable Liver Cancer in September 2018. Frank passed away on March 6th, 2019 in Kitchener, Ontario in his daughter Megan and son in law Curtis Barnes' home, surrounded by his family, sober and at peace. He had made every amends and apologies that needed to be made and repaired every relationship well in advance of his diagnosis. He chose the date of death with the assistance of doctor assisted suicide (M.A.I.D.) and was able to end his life on his own terms, with his loved ones by his side the whole time.

We should all be so Lucky.

There will be no formal service, and the family asks that you please celebrate Frank's life in your own way and remember him well.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations directly to the Waterloo Hospice Society or buy a nice bottle of Whiskey and pour a drink for yourself and your loved ones and hold them tight. You never know when it may be your last time.

Please visit Frank's obituary notice on Facebook.

You were a kind soul.. I'm so happy to hear that you made peace with loved ones and went on your terms although I'm sure it hurts the hearts of so many to see you go. May you rest in peace. Much love. M

I've only known Frank a few short months and would regularly drive him to Hospice for Tuesday visits. I really enjoyed listening to stories of his family, his life, and his work in earlier days logging in BC. A very interesting man indeed.
My sympathies to the family.
Peace Frank

I only just discovered this notice today and am so sorry to hear of the loss of your dad Frank. Actually, if it wasn't for Frank, I likely wouldn't live in Victoria, BC today. I met him the summer of 1974 and it was your dad that showed me all the beauty of Vancouver Island, particularly the Port Alberni area where he was working between logging and the Youth Hostel. I can imagine that he had struggles in life, however he was a very kind and caring man and I am glad that I was able to spend the time I did with him and that he was a big part of my journey. Take care of yourself and I can well imagine that your dad is watching over you and your family. God Bless.

Frank and I were good friends starting in Don Mills, in 1965. I knew his mother and father, and his slightly older brother John. I left for Waterloo in 1971, and Frank found himself in BC. Through the years, Frank and I would manage to hook up if he was on a trip back to Ontario, or if I was heading west for work. Around 1986, I met Pat, Frank and infant Megan in their home in Vancouver.

Shortly thereafter Pat, Frank and Megan visited our family in Waterloo. They were on a road trip to the east coast to visit Pat’s family. Frank was very proud. It was beyond a doubt the happiest Frank had ever been. Around a year later, Frank visited us in Waterloo on his own. He was deeply affected by the loss of Pat.

Staying in touch became more difficult although we did connect over the phone a few times. The last time Frank and I talked was around 2004. He was visiting in Toronto and wanted to come and visit us in Ottawa. We waited for him but he did not arrive.

I made many attempts to locate him through the years with no success. I could not locate his brother John and I did not know Megan’s married name. A few days ago I tried again and found this announcement.

I wish I could have come to see him before he passed. I am so glad to know he was sober for many years and spent his last years peacefully with Megan and her family. The picture of Frank with his grandson is heartfelt.

My condolences to the family.

Frank,
Wishing you continued peace and love in the afterlife.
Kev
