Geraldine Norma Leonard (née Heath) passed peacefully at St. Mary’s hospital July 21st at the age of 77.

Her joy for life, positive attitude and indomitable spirit will be missed by her three children; Huw (Camilla), Ian (Isilda) and Rhiannon (Rick), her five grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law, ex-husband (and his wife) and extended family. After working as an Registered Nurse for 35+ years, and living in many countries, she also had a very long list of friends that will miss her great sense of humour, her nurturing ways and ability to laugh in the face of her many trials and tribulations.

We would also like to thank the staff at St Mary’s (particularly the nurses and doctors in the CVICU) for their TLC while she was under their care for her final days.

Please join us to Celebrate Her Life on Sunday August 21st at the Mini Lakes pavilion in Aberfoyle from 1-3 p.m.  Google address:  2 Pavilion Road, Guelph  N0R 1K0.  Tip – look for gate 3 (Bull Frog Drive) off of Wellington Road 34.  A map can be found here.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or  The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada or do something kind for someone or fun as that is how  Geraldine lived her life - full of joy and taking care of others.

Geraldine was always such a positive influence on my life. I told her many times I can only dream of one day being as good a mother-in-law as she was to me. When I was navigating new motherhood she always found a way to tell me I was wonderful, and not to doubt myself – and she never made me feel she was second guessing me. She responded with such empathy and humour, even the most trying times were made to seem manageable. It made me want to ask for her opinion, because I trusted her so much.

I knew she would do anything for me or the kids in a heartbeat, no questions asked, and I wanted to be that same person for her. She bragged about me (about all of us) about how wonderful each of us was for doing this or that for her, to her friends, visiting nurses, doctors, to everyone. Her effusive praise often felt unwarranted for the relatively minor thing done, but singing others’ praises was her way of adding to the positive energy in the world and demonstrated her acknowledgment of and gratitude for the small things which connect us all and make life meaningful.

I have learned a lot from her.

We are happy to be part of Geraldine’s family. She took great pride and comfort in her children and grandchildren.

We have many remembrances of her lively visits to our cottage at Harvey Lake, NB including great stories of her early life, travels, and nursing experience - often accompanied by gales of laughter. She always was just a lot of fun.

In addition to the courage she showed in her life, what stands out in our memory is her kindness and compassion for others. She showed great empathy for other people, and knew what to say and do to jolly people along to do what they needed to do. She must have been a superb nurse!

All our love to her children and family.
