(November 13, 1940)

Peacefully passed away on March 27, 2021 in Kitchener, Ontario.  Grant was born in Montreal, Quebec to parents Woodrow Edward Wilson and Irene Wilson.

Grant attended McGill University and the University of Toronto completing an engineering degree before transferring to the University of Western Ontario, where he received a Masters in Applied Mathematics.  Grant went on to teach as a professor at Georgian college as well as practice as P.Eng.  Grant forged his path through life leaving a memorable impression on those he met; having accomplished great feats of athleticism, saving a family from a raging torrent, surviving a helicopter crash while working as an engineer and traveling the world for years at time.

During his downtime between travels, Grant would spend time with his younger first cousins (1R) Adam Newington (Jordan) and Morgan Newington (Karen) who he always referred to as his nephews.  Grant is also survived by first cousins Wayne Nesbit (Angela), Carol Newington and first cousin (1R) Robert Poirier (Judy).

Cremation has taken place. Messages and condolences may be left for the family at www.tricitycremations.com or 519.772.1237. Please visit Grant's obituary notice on Facebook.

Grant is/was a memory from a long time ago. A one time and long time boyfriend of my sister Judy, he came to know and appreciate our family on a few trips he made to northwestern Ontario. But the trip I remember most vividly is one he made with me and my sister Beverly to B.C.
One late July weekend Grant and I started out in Toronto in my fairly new Datsun 510 (1973), two drivers with minimal camping gear hoping to drive all day and into the night to Thunder Bay where we would pick up Bev who would join us for the remainder of the trip.
We left early on a Saturday morning and by the time we had passed Sudbury and were on our way to Sault Ste. Marie, we, or the car more precisely experienced trouble....transmission fluid trouble to be exact. By this time, in some small town, (Wawa seems to come to mind) most shops were closed or had limited supplies. But Grant was an engineer, and with the permission of a garage owner, he set to work with a piece of copper piping and managed to fashion a flange of some sort so that we could continue on our trip and make our way to Thunder Bay, almost on time. That piece of copper piping never had to be replaced. The car lasted another 8 years.
After picking up Bev, we stopped for a day in Sioux Narrows to visit with family and continued on our trip out west. With three drivers, the prairies sped by quickly until we reached Calgary, at a darkish but not yet full night hour. Grant being the curious guy that he was wanted to drive around Calgary a bit, while the two females wanted to find a place to stay and clean up. But drive we did. By this time, too, it was also the long weekend in August and once we/Grant decided it was time to look for a hotel or motel, everything was booked up. Calgary was a busy weekend town. So we drove some more, out of the city limits, and by midnight or so, found a farmer's field where we could pull over. Grant strung up a hammock between two fence posts and took out his sleeping bag. Bev and I folded down the seats and slept in the car in our sleeping bags. Come early morning, as we were snugged in, there came a knocking on the car window. Alberta being Alberta, and its weather being changeable, it had snowed overnight and you know who was outside in the hammock. The farmer's field, by the way, had both oil cranes and cattle, a testament to Alberta's past and present.
The journey continued to the Okanogan Valley where we stopped and camped for a few days in Penticton, a more enjoyable and restful time with good restaurant meals, a bit of sight-seeing and swimming. We had only a small pup tent, suitable for two, so Grant continued to sleep outdoors, but the weather was much more congenial to sleeping under the big sky.
We made our way over and through the mountains, and once we reached Vancouver and negotiated the many bridges we all went our separate ways. Grant stayed in Vancouver to visit with relatives, Bev went to Victoria to visit with a former roommate, and I made my way to Mayne Island to visit with friends.
Grant did not join us on the trip home, flying back to Toronto instead. Bev and I stopped in Penticton on the way home to buy two boxes of fresh peaches that we had promised our mother (the scent of peaches on a hot August afternoon was deliciously tempting but that was a promise we kept), and there were no more trips with Grant Wilson.
But there he was, the man in full, ready to travel, to be an engineer, to take the rough with the good, to take a joke or two, and to continue solo.
Rest in peace to a good man.
