He proudly served in The British Army in the early 1960’s, in the Royal Engineers, stationed in Britain and Germany.
He came to Canada in 1969 settling in Cambridge, Ontario where he raised his family with his wife Judith Hardy (nee Baxandale).
Loving and devoted father to Joanne (Gary), Suzanne (Brian), Carolynne (Stephen), and Steven. Cherished and fondly remembered Grandad to Amanda (Stefan), Christopher, Matthew, Michael, Joey, Rebecca, Anthony, Daniel, and Nicholas. He was a proud Great Grandad to Julian and Andre.
Remembered fondly by his many nieces and nephews and cousins.
Predeceased by parents William and Elizabeth Hardy, Sister Maureen Hardy, Brother Alan Hardy and Niece Deborah Sainsbury. Survived by his Sister Mary Sainsbury and Brother-in- law Michael Sainsbury.
He worked hard to support his family and spent most of his life working as a plant supervisor in factory settings. He retired at the age of sixty, after winning his first battle with cancer.
He enjoyed his retirement travelling to places such as Portugal, England, Italy, Antigua, Australia, and Dominican Republic, enjoying good food and drink, family and sightseeing.
Hugh will be remembered for his loud resounding contagious laugh, his love of jokes and love of animals. He had a huge heart and a wicked sense of humour. He had an incredible knowledge of history and loved trivia. Family always came first for him; the last thing he would tell us whenever we said good-bye to him was “take care of each other”.
He courageously battled and defeated cancer in 2003 and 2018 and often seemed unstoppable, keeping a smile on his face and a positive attitude right until the end.
We would like to thank the staff at Saint Luke’s Place Transition Wing for the care and attention they paid to our Dad, during the last two years.
Cremation has taken place. In the Spring we will take him to his final resting place, to be placed with his Mum and Dad, in Manchester, England.
A Celebration Of Life Service will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2022 at 1:00pm at The Royal Canadian Legion Galt Branch, 4 Veterans Way, Cambridge.
