Those with the great fortune of knowing Joan Pearl Elvy would agree that she was a tour-de-force, remembered for her high energy and love of life. A self-made woman and entrepreneur at heart, “Joanie” started out as a hairdresser, but found her true calling in sales. Gifted with a vivacious personality and quick wit, whatever the cause Joan could sell it. Her love of travel and photography later took her to Mexico, Spain, Portugal, and Iceland. She then spent countless hours making and selling cards at local businesses.
Joan was known for her coordinated wardrobe, hat collection, and yoga skills at her final residence, St. Andrews Terrace (Cambridge, Ontario). Diagnosed with a progressive form of Alzheimers, Joan tried her best to communicate in animated ways during zoom calls with family. The battle was particularly cruel for a woman who loved to chat it up and engage with others.
Joan Pearl Elvy was mother to Joanne, Paul, Stephen & Rob; grandmother to Jessica, Eiríkur Raphael, Ryan, Stephanie & Henri; plus 7 great-grandchildren. Joan was also proud of her role as foster care “Mom” to over 22 kids, many with whom she remained in touch, reminiscing special moments, love and laughter.
Joan passed peacefully in her sleep one Sunday afternoon, joining her beloved son Paul (1961 -1971) up with the angels, the two “safe in the arms of Jesus.”
Our extended family and friends wish to thank the wonderful caregivers at St. Andrews Terrace for their compassionate support, all of you remarkably dedicated in your service during Joan’s last difficult years.
