Joanne Hugill peacefully passed away, surrounded by family, on March 12, 2022, at Trinity Village Care Centre at the age of 78 years after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s and dementia.

Joanne was born in St. Stephen, NB and later moved to Montreal where she and John met while skiing. From there they moved to Kitchener where they raised their daughters.  Moving again to Ohio for work and then back to Kitchener where they enjoyed retirement.  They loved to travel, often with friends, to enjoy what the world had to offer.

Joanne was a proud Registered Nurse.  She received her training at the Saint John General Hospital in New Brunswick and received her post graduate training in the operating room at Montreal General Hospital. Joanne worked in Bermuda, Montreal and at the Grand River Hospital.  She retired in 1995 after a victorious battle with breast cancer.

Joanne enjoyed bridge, reading, skiing and going to the movies. She took up golf in retirement and had an everlasting desire to improve her swing. Joanne formed close friendships wherever she went and was known for her strength, warm smile, and her compassionate spirit.

She was the beloved wife of John William Hugill for 48 years.  Loving mother of Laura Hugill (Brett) and Sarah Hugill.  Cherished sister of Beverly Duke (Ward), Terry Simpson (Trevor) and Jim Irving. She will be fondly remembered by her nieces, Karen Simpson and Emma Walsh.  Predeceased by her parents James and Helen Irving.  She will be sorely missed by all, but her memory will live on in our hearts.

The Hugill family would like to extend our gratitude to all the staff at Trinity Village Care Centre, for their attentiveness and loving care.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Parkinson Canada, Canadian Cancer Society or Trinity Village as expressions of sympathy.

Messages and condolences may be left for the family at www.tricitycremations.com or 519.772.1237. Please  visit Joanne's obituary notice on Facebook.

Joanne was a caring, wonderful, good friend. She always dressed beautifully and wore a big engaging smile. She was a warm, compassionate listener and was genuinely interested in your life as well as your family members. She expressed her opinions openly but would take into account other’s opinions. Joanne was a well grounded down to earth person, who would gladly share her medical knowledge she gained from being a nurse. Joanne had a good sense of humour and enjoyed other’s company. That is why she had so many circles of good friends. She was a joy to be around. It is sad that we did not have a chance to say the proper goodbye to her that she deserved. We will sadly miss having Joanne in our lives.

Sad news to hear of Joanne's leaving us - the classmates of SJGH stay together in mind even if far apart. Many happy and funny memories... May God give you His peace as you carry on. From Marge (Cann) Kirk

Joanne was a good friend to many of us in our nursing class. I certainly remember her fondly. I am sorry for your loss..
I guess all of us in that class are of that age now. I wish that I
had been in communication with her more but I have good
memories of our time in SJ. We have done a lot of moving around
which didn't help with keeping in touch.
I am so sorry for your loss and will remember you in my prayers.

Joanne or Jo always struck me as such a happy, unpretentious, and honest soul, being with her was always a positive interaction. No BS involved. Helpful, kind, full of good advice especially when it concerned men,( advice not always taken) but looking back over the years her values and thoughts she shared with me during our training years have proven to be spot on, she always spoke straight from the heart.
I shall never forget you and your cheerful personality, rest in peace dear friend.

I have wonderful memories of Joanne. She shared my apartment in Montreal for a short time and she taught me how to apply eyeliner properly. She introduced me to "power naps" so we could go out in Montreal and "boogie" . She and I went out "on district" together in our second year of training and she and her family visited me in North Delta. For awhile we exchanged fun emails mostly about golf.
My heartfelt sympathy to John and family.
