With the same quiet dignity that distinguished his life, John Dever died February 3, 2020, surrounded by family, at the age of 87.

Precious soulmate to Marie Askin, and dedicated, supportive father to Michael, Mary (John), Marty (Ryan) and Kathryn (Michael). Proud grandfather of Andrea and Sarah. John will be fondly remembered by his brother Morgan (Bev Palin) and their children, as well as the extended Askin family.

After growing up in Toronto and Mount Forest, John enjoyed a long and fulfilling career in construction management across Ontario and Quebec until his retirement in 2018. He loved sharing stories of his favourite projects, including Expo 67, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and many in Waterloo Region and the GTA. When not working, you'd find John with a good book, a glass of wine, chatting in English and French, and enjoying CBC radio. His children aspire to the healthy lifestyle he embraced, even though his marathon power walks and ‘weird’ food mortified them as teenagers.

A private family memorial service and interment will take place in Mount Forest.

John died in hospital while waiting for a place in hospice. Please consider a donation directly to Hospice Waterloo Region   to support their important work in providing end-of-life care.

We’re very sorry for the loss of John and are thinking of Marie, Mary, John, Marty, Ryan, Katie, Mike, Michael, Andrea, and Sarah, and the Askin family. My favourite memories of John we’re on first meeting him and he asking if my last name was spelled with an ‘e’ therefore possibly Irish. Sadly, no ‘e’. Also running into him not long after coming out and he giving me a great big hug!

My condolences to everyone.
The picture that was chosen for his remembrance is exactly how I remember John the last time I saw him. He was laughing at something Andrea or Sarah said or did. He seemed to get such a kick of just listening to whatever ridiculous thing came out of their mouths.
I would like to make a toast to a life well lived and a man I am proud to say I knew, and respected immensely. Someone so special will never be forgotten.

My sincere sympathy to John's family and those who loved him.

John and I are third cousins. I have fond memories of our lengthy telephone conversations.

For me, John was a man of honour and dignity and we will miss him in many ways, including his wisdom, compassion and Irish humour.

Rest In Peace, John.

I'm incredibly saddened to hear the news this morning!

I have had the pleasure of knowing John professionally for the last 25 years, and he has influenced my career more than any other. John has been a true mentor and friend, providing support and guidance in every step of the way and is a big part of who I am today. I have always used the phrase when describing John, "he oozes with integrity", and I always try to lead by his example.

I facilitated his last place of employment when he was 72 years of age, where he continued working for 12 years before retiring! His passion in business development, along with a great work ethic, kept him employed longer than anyone else I know.

John, you will always be my inspiration to continue regardless of the challenges I face.

May you rest in peace, and know that you will be missed!
