It is with great sadness that the family of Katelyn Eileen MacDonald announce her passing, on Monday, July 6, 2020, at the age of 32 years.

Katelyn will be forever remembered and loved by her fiancé, Mark Hunter and her parents, Sherry and Bernard and sister, Kathleen. Katelyn will be lovingly remembered by her grandmothers, Catherine Penney and Dorothy MacDonald and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. Katelyn was predeceased by her grandfather Gerald Joseph Penney.

Katelyn was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She moved to the U.S. with her family, while in Middle School. Katelyn attended High School in Orlando, FL at Bishop Moore Catholic HS, where she graduated with Honors. She went to the University of Florida on a scholarship & then the University of Waterloo, earning an undergraduate degree in Environmental Sciences – with Honours. She then obtained a Master of Science degree at UW, before entering the workforce at Esri.

Katelyn was a passionate life-long learner with a desire to make the world a better place. After an experience attending to the needs of her ill grandfather, Katelyn was inspired to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. At the time of her passing, Katelyn was a junior nursing student at the University of Toronto, in the Accelerated BSN program. She was inspired daily by her classmates and peers. Clinical experiences were her favorite activity in the nursing program, and she enjoyed the camaraderie with her clinical peers, nurses and especially the patients she cared for. She supported her classmates, by being a Student Union representative at U of T.

For the last several years, Katelyn lived in Toronto with Mark and their two cherished cats; Penny and Luna. Katelyn was never more at home than when she was exploring the outdoors, where she thrived. Her inquisitive mind and strong sense of curiosity always led her on a path of discovery.

Katelyn’s adventurous spirit inspired her many travels including a tour of Europe after college with a cherished friend and across Canada, in search of the most interesting landscapes, diverse geographies and of course, the best camping sites. In her early years Katelyn enjoyed summers with her sister and cousins in Marion Bridge, Cape Breton with their grandparents. She loved to reflect on the happy times spent ‘out on the Mira’.

Celebration of life services to remember Katelyn, are delayed by the Covid-19 Pandemic and will be scheduled at a later time. In honor of Katelyn’s love of caring for animals, those who so desire may make memorial donations in lieu of flowers to Toronto Humane Society, 11 River St, Toronto. Please visit Katelyn's obituary notice on Facebook.

It was good to hear and learn today how Katelyn was an inspiration to her classmates in nursing and a gift to the patients she care for. She is missed and remembered by her nursing class.

What a touching tribute to her personality. I am the cherished friend she went on the European trip with, such an amazing experience we shared. I miss you baby girl, and I'm carrying you with me everywhere I go.

I am so sorry for your tremendous loss. I had the privilege of hiring Katelyn into her first GIS professional position at Esri Canada. Katelyn was a fantastic colleague, so bright and positive. She shared many stories about Cape Breton and her family and she used to bring in cookies she made from family recipes. She was a wonderful presence in our workplace.

Vivacious. Confidant. Approachable. Compassionate. Considerate. Full of Energy. Authentic. These are the first words that come to mind when I think of Katelyn. I still have a vivid memory of my first day at Esri Canada and meeting Katelyn - she made us newbies feel so comfortable and felt like an automatic friend we could go to for anything. I will never forget the warmth her smile and personality brought to the office everyday. My heart goes out to your family and sending you strength to get through this difficult time.
