 1958 - 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mehran Alaee on April 28, 2021 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

He is survived by his partner Karen and daughter Jessica. He was a loving, supportive partner, father, brother uncle and a special Abu to Lucas.

Mehran loved life. He was genuine, giving, considerate and had a passion for the environment. He was always caring towards family, friends and colleagues alike. All difficult circumstances could be softened with his passion to cook and feed others.

Mehran was an expert in environmental mass spectrometry and a highly respected scientist with numerous international collaborations. Over the years, his research targeted some of the key challenges in the field of aquatic contaminants. His efforts will have a lasting impact and have helped to change Environment and Climate Change Canada policies and regulations. He also sat on several international scientific committees.

Mehran’s desire to carry on his environmental legacy led him to be an adjunct professor at various universities, where he mentored many students and post-docs over the years. Through them his passion for the environment will live on.

Mehran will be greatly missed by family, friends and colleagues. He has left this world a better place and those who knew him with an appreciation of his kindness and compassion.

Tributes in Mehran’s memory can be made to either Hamilton Out of the Cold or Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Excellent friend and scientist we started together the organization of High Resolution MS and LC-tandem MS in environmental applications and food safety . Last year we did organize the 16th virtual international workshop from Barcelona. This year the 17th Workshop is planned in Ottawa next October. I will propose that the workshop series be named Mehran Alaee for the next editions .
My deepest condolences to his family and close friends

I am really sorry to hear of Mehran's passing. He was a kind person and highly respected by his friends and colleagues. I recall that when I was writing up my thesis and mulling what to do next, he volunteered to introduce me to the folks at Environment Canada and I count him as one of the those who helped me get a start in an unfamiliar field. Last time I talked to him, he wisely advised me to "be successful and pay taxes". Words to live by I think. My deepest sympathies to Mehran's family and friends who knew him best. Karl.

My deepest condolences to Mehran’s family and loved ones at this very sad time . I worked with Mehran for four short years . It was an intensely busy time of collaboration , communication and research. I shall never forget those years of mentoring and the good fortune of learning from someone so knowledgeable . I also remember how frequently Mehran spoke of his daughter , and how clear it was how much he loved her . Mehran will be missed and remembered by so many people .

Mehran was one of the welcoming faces of national union work for me, seeking me out at my first big union gathering after getting elected to the Research Group exec, introducing me to people, leading with curiosity and openness. He stepped up when things needed doing in bargaining and running the Group. I'll miss him, his positive and extroverted outlook, his sense of humour and his dogged work for his fellow workers.

My condolences to Mehran's loved ones. He made a positive difference in so many lives.

I was saddened to learn of Mehran's passing. A great loss for the many the knew him. I had known Mehran for over 20 years and for 17 of those years we were Research Scientist colleagues with ECCC. He was always approachable, friendly and optimistic, and he was in his element and had great energy in the conferences his helped organize and guide over the last years. Mehran made his mark and influenced the science of analyzing for and determining the presence of flame retarding chemicals in the environment. My sincerest condolences to his family and close friends. In time only the positive and happy memories will remain. R.I.P.

My sincere condolences to Mehran's family. I know him from Dioxin2001 in South Korea, when he was genuinely interested in my poster. I still cannot believe that I will not see him anymore at conferences. He used to "tease" me and tell to have fun. He said that this is what friends do. Rest in peace, my friend. Mehran was my direct supervisor for the past 10 years at CCIW.

I will greatly miss our office chats and many lunches about various topics including family, food, sports and any other topic that came up at the moment. We loved having playful competitions between the two of us whether it was who could smoke the better food, who has the newest technology or whose hockey team was doing better than the others.

Mehran always reminded me, “it’s 20% what you know, and 80% who you know”.

Well, working with Mehran I can proudly say I have had the opportunity of working and collaborating with so many great people around the world, that I would not have had the opportunity to meet otherwise.

There is so much more I could write. Mehran, thank you for always pushing me to be the best version of myself. You will be greatly missed.

My deepest and most sincere condolences to his family.

To Karen and all of Mehran's family and friends: I was stunned and saddened to learn of Mehran's passing. I had the privilege of working with him at Environment Canada's National Water Research Institute where I came to know him as a gentle, brilliant scientist. It was this connection that led him to join my International Cooking Club Chapter in Niagara. At Les Marmitons he showed great skill and joy in the kitchen, living up to the motto of the organization, "friendship thorough gastronomy". When he moved to Waterloo I was glad to see him again more regularly, as he became a member of the Waterloo Region Chapter. He will be missed.
