November 18, 1927 - March 2, 2021

Norman passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital, Kitchener after a brief and courageous struggle with Pulmonary Fibrosis on March 2, 2021 at the age of 93.

Predeceased by Beryl, his beloved wife of 65 years.  Dearly loved father of Wendy Atkins (Derek), Sabrina Persaud (Narine), and Karen Horton (David).  Cherished Grandfather of Richard (Felicia), Amanda, Steven (Cindy), Alex (Viktoria), Jeffrey (Keira) and Kaila.  He was delighted to be the Great Grandfather of Titan, Seychelle and Charlotte.

Norman was the treasured son of Sydney Norman (Sr) and Celeste Maude, both deceased.  He is survived by his sisters Beryl, Barbara (Yogin) and Norma (Geoffrey), sisters-in-law Vernie (Bidda), Joyce (Jack), Mary and Carmen.  He was proud to be the patriarch of his family and was cherished by his many cousins.  He was the beloved uncle of numerous nieces and nephews.  He will be remembered fondly by his large extended family and many friends throughout the world.

Born in Guyana, Norman, Beryl and their children immigrated to Montreal, Quebec in 1971 and Norman remained a proud Guyanese-Canadian throughout his life.  He enjoyed recounting his memories of growing up in Guyana and sharing many amusing stories from his youth.  In Guyana, Norman worked at The Demerara Life Insurance Company before working at various oil companies during which he enjoyed extensive travels.  In Montreal, he was the valued Accountant for Seltzer’s drug stores.  He was an avid cricketer who enjoyed nothing more than discussing the finer points of the game.  He was a snooker champion, enjoyed playing cards, listening to music and watching movies from his era and also playing computer games.  He had a love affair with automobiles throughout his life as evidenced by his collection of miniature cars.

Norman and Beryl treated everyone they met as family and enjoyed socialising with everyone.  Their home was always open to their children and their friends and they hosted many parties which everyone remembers fondly as fun events – those were the best of times!  They shared a love of dancing and we know they are now reunited, dancing together in Heaven.  Above all, they were devoted to their children and will be sadly missed by all their family– the examples and principles they set will guide them throughout their lives.

After many years in Quebec, Norman and Beryl moved to Ajax, Ontario where they were lucky to enjoy the love and friendship of family and friends.  For the last few years of their lives, they moved to the Doon Village Retirement Residence in Kitchener where they could be close to Wendy and her family and the family is all grateful for the care extended to them while there.  When Beryl passed away 2 years ago, a large portion of his heart went with her and while we grieve that he is no longer with us, we are comforted knowing they are together again.

His family wish to thank Dr. Johansen & Dr. Guy for his care in the last years and Dr. Coyen and nurses Daria, Tigist and Rebecca as well as all the doctors and nurses in the Emergency Department and Respiratory ward at the St. Mary’s Hospital, Kitchener for their care during the last days of his life as well as the kindness extended to his family during this special time.

Cremation has taken place.  A Memorial Service to celebrate Norman’s life with family and friends will be held at a later date when the COVID restrictions are lifted and it is safe for everyone to gather together.

In lieu of flowers, donations to The SickKids Foundation of Toronto at www.sickkidsfoundation.com or a charity of your choice would be gratefully appreciated.

Messages and condolences may be left for the family at www.tricitycremations.com.

It was great knowing Uncle Norman. He was always so laid back and comfortable to chat with - yes, especially if cricket was a conversation topic. Thanks for all that your great personality has given to all who knew you.

I have lost the last of my friends (like family) with I spoke nearly everyday on Skype recalling our early youthful days in BG. I'll miss our daily chats as I now have no one who can replace my cherished friend of about 80 odd years. Norman Rest in Peace and may the Lord's Perpetual Light Shine on you always. Love and God Bless.

Wendy Sabrina Karen and the whole family
Sadness grieves us all for the loss of your daddy . Uncle Norman was a wonderful thoughtful caring man . Such dignity did he carry himself with. I took great joy in talking and watching him when we went on vacations as a little girl because he reminded me of Grandad so much . But my greatest memory of him was watching him and Auntie Beryl dancing every dance at reunions and weddings . You all grieve now but alas what beautiful memories are left which will last forever until you meet again .
Much love and hugs
Simone and Keith

Both Norman and I along with his brother Freddie played cricket for the GCC in the 60s. We also lived in close contact in Bel Air Park separated by a fence.
When I came to Canada in the early 70s on my way to a business visit to the UK, I visited Norman in his office in Montreal. When I immigrated to Toronto in 1976, we kept in close contact by telephone.
When he moved to Toronto we spoke on the phone quite often and of course the conversation was always cricket.
Norman remained a good friend until the end as I spoke with him a few weeks ago.
I am indeed very sad on the passing of my good friend and especially after losing Beryl and Freddie. I would like to take this opportunity in forwarding my deepest condolences to his entire family. Rest in peace my friend. PS. Amanda, thank you very much for sharing all the information.

We have known and have been closely associated with the Abdool family for as long as we can remember. Salt of the earth family; knowing them has been an inspiration and a true priivilidge.

Rest in peace.

Norman was a close friend in guyana. We played for different cricket teams but I must admit he was one of the better off spinners of our time in guyana . Moreover he was a very respectful person and good company at all times. My wife Elaine and I send our best wishes and love to all his family.

Our deepest condolences to the entire Abdool family on the passing of Norman. As a member of the Queen’s College Team, I (Charles) played cricket against his club and Norman was competitive and always showed great sportsmanship. May his soul rest in peace.

Norman was one of the nicest people I have ever met. He always had a huge smile on face and an easy going nature. I will always have fond memories of visiting with him and having adult beverages with him. I know he had that huge smile when he was reunited with his beloved Beryl.
