Martin (Marty) Rankl

(1951–2025)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Martin (Marty) Rankl on August 20, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born in 1951 in Austria, Marty lived a life rich in adventure, laughter, and unwavering devotion to those he held dear.

Marty was predeceased by his beloved parents, Katharina and Ladislous (Les), and his brother Frank. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength as a devoted father to Leigh Rankl (Steph)and Lisa McCoy (Jamie), and a proud stepfather to Alex Wildfong and Nick Wildfong (Kristine). Known affectionately as Opa, Marty cherished his time with his grandchildren: Abby, Austin, Mitch, Chelsey, Avery, Hank, Owen, and Reid, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.

He is survived by his loving wife Susanne, his sister Liz Rankl-Warford (Glen), and his cherished nieces and nephews: Ashley Irwin (Matt), Dave Cook (Tessa), Melissa Rankl (Andrew), and Kaitlin Rankl, to whom he was a proud and caring uncle. Marty is also lovingly remembered by his long-time friend Joan Sketchley, whose enduring friendship was a source of comfort and companionship throughout his life.

Marty was a man of the outdoors—an avid golfer, a passionate fisherman, and a lifelong skier who found peace and exhilaration in nature’s embrace. Whether carving down snowy slopes or casting a line into quiet waters, he lived with a spirit of adventure and a deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.

His warmth, humor, and quiet strength will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Marty’s legacy lives on in the stories shared around dinner tables, the laughter echoing on ski hills, and the love he instilled in his family.

A celebration of Marty’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Marty’s memory by spending time outdoors with those you love—just as he would have wanted or consider donations to the following charities:

Aspen Wildlife Refuge

Canadian Ski Patrol

Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada

Plant a Tree in Memorial
