Roger took his final journey "Home" on Oct 23, 2019 and is survived by his three sons, Derek (Rose) Magnetawan, Ontario, Mel (Barb) Invermere, British Columbia, and Raymond of Hamilton Ontario. Eight grandchildren Chris (Marissa); Gillian (Dave Pys) of Ayr; Tracy of Ayr; Trevor of Sault Ste Marie, Jason (Ira) of Sherwood Park, Alberta; Emily of Invermere, British Columbia, Angie of Cambridge; Ray of Cambridge and sixteen great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews in England, United States and  New Zealand.

Predeceased by his wife Sylvia of 73 years (2015) and their son Christopher (1952).

oger was born in Aberfan, Wales and moved to Redditch, England when he was 8 years old. As a child he survived the Great Depression and started work when he was 10 years old, earning less than one penny a day. When he turned 18, he was drafted into the British Army and spent 6 years with the Essex 49th Division infantry and at the young age of 20 participated in the 1944 Normandy campaign invasion, landing on Gold beach.

During the war his duties took him through France, Belgium and Holland where he was injured by shrapnel causing wounds to both legs. His post war assignments were spent at the sea port in Cuxhaven Germany as military movement control.

Following his discharge from the army, he returned to Redditch England and began work at Birmingham Small Arms Co (BSA) plant as a motorcycle technician and then working at the High Duty Alloys in the tool room and die shop where he became a Machinist.

In 1957 Roger and his family immigrated to Canada on the Queen Mary from Dover to New York and made their home in Galt, Ontario. Roger was a “Jack of all trades” and worked a number of years as a supervisor at Shurly-Dietrich-Atkins Co and finally as Quality Control at Walker Exhaust.

Roger spent most of his working life in Cambridge and retired moving to Kincardine, Ontario for 10 years and returning back to Cambridge and then residing in Ayr for nine years up until 2012 when they moved to St. Andrews Terrace, Cambridge; where he was a well-known character with a unique sense of humor with strong opinions that he made known to everyone he met.

Roger's "Celebration of Life" will be held on October 31, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Trinity Anglican Church, Cambridge, Ontario. Light lunch to follow.

Hello Derek, Mel & Raymond. Your dad had a very long and successful life, along with fortunately having good health for the most part; this is all something to be very thank full for. The Jones and Wallbank's were family friends for many years and I have a lot fond memories of your mom & dad over the years.I'll also never forget your dad coming to the plant to tell my dad, Tony and I that he was retiring; he was very pleased about it. I won't be able to attend the celebration of life, but will be thinking of your dad and yourselves. Regards, Keith Wallbank

So sorry to hear the sad news of Uncle Roger's death. Roger was very special to me when I was young. When he came over to visit us in England it was one of the most exciting things I can remember from my childhood. He and mum had been so close too because of their shared background and circumstances - it makes it all the more sad that the passing of Roger marks the end of that generation of our family.
I'm grateful for the great times we shared when he and Sylvia came over to visit and for his hospitality when we came over to Canada. Condolences to all the family in Canada.
Regards,
Steve, Tina, Tayo and Rheanna-Fay Moore

I was 16 years old when I met my future father-in-law and not once since then have I ever felt anything but love and respect for him or my dear mother-in-law (Sylvia aka Nanny). They have left me with decades of memories that will always be close to my heart. Two words reasonate in my mind as I think of Grandad. “. Thank You”. I feel so richly blessed by having you in my life”.
Grandad’s kindness, sense of humour, respect, love and joy in his grandchildren and great grandchildren was such a big part of his demeanor. As my family deals with his loss, I know they will feel the joys and sense of relationships he had always transmitted to them over the years. RIP Grandad. We love you! And will miss you.

Dear Roger, I have known you since the age of 7, 63 years. You and Sylvia were like parents to my brother and me. You took us with you and your family on trips, we stayed at your home quite often, you fed us and gave us a family home. You and Sylvia were remarkably kind to us. My childhood would have been very different without you. I will never forget you Roger, nor Sylvia. Bless your heart. Love, Marion

I first met Roger and Sylvia when we moved next-door to them in Cambridge in 1983 just before my first baby Lindsey was born. From that time onwards I always thought of them as my 'second Mum and Dad', my first being back home in England. I have to confess I loved them both just as much as my 'real' parents, so much so that a year after they moved to Kincardine our family followed them there. They babysat for my daughters who thought of them as surrogate grandparents. They were both so kind to my family and I and were a tremendous source of support over the years. I last saw Roger 3 years ago when I was back in Canada for a visit and was hoping to see him again next year. I forgot his advanced years - he was always 'as sharp as a tack'. I think of Roger and Sylvia often and always with a smile, we had some lovely, fun times together. My family's life is much richer for having known them. My condolences to all the family.
