Allen (“Al”) Veldhuyzen
December 31, 1974 – May 30, 2026
Allen (“Al”) Veldhuyzen, 51, of Cambridge, ON, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, May 30, 2026, after a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and boundless love. Beloved husband to Laura (nee Pelletier) for 21 years and loving father to Sarah, Emily, and Alex. Sadly missed by his father Benjamin, siblings Frederick (Andrea) and Janet (Roger) Bushey, father and mother in-law Robert & Mary Pelletier, brothers-in-law Brian (Lesley) Pelletier, and Mike (Shannon) Pelletier, and nieces and nephews Eve, Erik, Reid, Ryker, John, Taylor and Ally. Special cousin, friend, and “funcle” to Scott, Laura, Lucas and Charlotte Firth. Predeceased by his mother, Elsie.
To his family and friends, Al was known to be witty, welcoming, and wise. To his children, he was a hero, a mentor, and a master of terrible (but endearing) dad jokes.
Al became a geography teacher in 2000 with the goal to not only educate in the classroom, but also through coaching sports. He thrived while guiding new high school students to become responsible young adults and organizing and coaching many sports during his teaching career, leaving a lasting impression on many of his students, athletes, and fellow coaches and colleagues. Al was also very active within the teacher’s union for many years, providing tireless support and direction for his teaching colleagues.
In his free time, you could find Al playing board games or creating a BBQ feast. He took great pride in his smoked brisket, ribs, and turkey, and loved to share them with family and friends.
During his battle, Al was grateful to have many friends continue to support him by sending messages and making visits. He was also thankful to have more time at home to spend with his family, including attending his children’s sports and school events.
Special thanks to Dr. Lin and the Medical Day Care Staff at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, who provided amazing care for Al throughout his fight, along with the Palliative Care team, who provided in-home support in Al’s final months. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation directed specifically to Cancer Care.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2026. Details can be found here.
