John Albert Devries
1938 – 2026
“Happy is the man who finds a true friend, and far happier is he who finds that true friend in his wife." —Franz Schubert
The world became a little less bright on Tuesday, April 15, 2026, with the passing of John Albert Devries at the age of 87, at Sunnyside Long Term Care Home. John was surrounded by his family and went home to be with the Lord leaving a void in our hearts that can never be filled. His life was a beautiful story of resilience, love and generosity. His memory will forever live in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. John was born on September 8, 1938, in the Netherlands and was a true “gentleman”. John’s infectious laughter, twinkling eyes when he smiled, zest for life and unending humor brought joy to everyone around him.
John was a dedicated and loving husband to Tiemie who passed away only a mere four weeks earlier. John met Tiemie at the Dutch Reformed Church in Cambridge, Ontario and John knew then, that he would love her until the day he died. They married only 9 months later to go on to almost 60 years married this July. John and Tiemie’s love story has set a shining example to all of their friends and family. Where there is love there is life.
John believed in the power of prayer and family and dedicated his life to creating a loving and supportive home. Throughout his life, he found strength in the gospel and maintained a personal devotion that was steady, humble, and sincere. His stories, advice, and warm hugs will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
John is survived by his children John Martin (Erin) and Rita Elizabeth, whom he deeply loved and was proud of, his beloved grandchildren, Taylor, Maddison, Noah, Rilee, Connor (Beth), Dyllan and Emma, his dear brothers, Al (Marijke), Richard (Helena), Peter who is predeceased (Hilda), his sister Corrie (Simon) and many nieces and nephews. John is now reunited with his loving parents, Elske and Albert.
The family cannot extend enough gratitude and appreciation to the staff on the Riverside floor at Sunnyside Long Term Care Home for their attention and compassion towards John for his exceptional care, especially over the last four weeks since his beloved Tiemie’s passing.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life/memorial service for John and Tiemie will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 11:00 am at the Dutch Christian Reformed Church, 1275 Bleams Road, Kitchener. The celebration will be live streamed at https://www.youtube.com/@CommunityCRC
A luncheon will follow the celebration at the church hall.
