Melva Leigh Rempel (Nies)
1952-2025
Mel’s life began in Calgary on June 19, 1952. She was adopted soon after by George and Ina Nies and grew up with one older sister Georgina. They moved to Kitchener in 1961 where her father managed Burns Meats until his passing. Mel was always interested in literature and reading so studied Journalism at Conestoga College. She started studying the bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses after listening in on their conversations with her mother. She met Vic at a high school drop-in center, who was immediately attracted by her outgoing personality, then convinced him to study the bible as well. They married two years later in 1973.
Mel was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness in 1974 and became an active participant in church activities which became her lifelong faith. They had two sons Chris (died at 11 yrs old 1988) and Greg.
She became a teaching assistant and continued for 32 years working with learning and hearing disabled and autistic children. In later years she found the identity of her birth parents and became close to her brother Roy still living in Calgary.
Sadly, Mel had health issues much of her life and passed away of kidney failure Saturday December 27, 2025.
She will be remembered and missed by all those who were fortunate enough to have her in their life.
A memorial service will take place on Saturday January 3, 2026, at 1:30 pm at the 355 Gage Ave Kitchener Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s witnesses.
Please send donations in her memory to Hospice Waterloo Region or Ronald McDonald House.
