Michael Stankowitsch
1940 - 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Stankowitsch, who passed away peacefully at Midtown Hospital on July 12, 2026, at the age of 85, following complications from a stroke and cancer.
Born in Europe, Michael immigrated to Canada with his family following the Second World War, and Kitchener-Waterloo became his lifelong home. He built a life defined by hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to helping others. Teaching was more than a career to him, it was his passion. He spent 26 years at St. Jerome's High School, where he served as Head of the History Department and positively influenced generations of students through his engaging teaching style, high standards, fairness, and sense of humor. He concluded his teaching career at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School in Cambridge. Long after graduation, former students would often stop to say hello, thank him, and share stories of how he had changed their lives, a testament to the lasting impact he had on so many. He also enjoyed the camaraderie of his colleagues and was always ready for a game of ping pong in the staff lounge at St. Jerome's.
Michael is lovingly remembered by his wife, Barbara Robb, his son, Mike Stankowitsch, daughter-in-law Kathleen, and cherished grandson, Jakob; his daughter, Kali Solomon, his stepson, Brock Smith, and Brock's wife, Kelly Smith; his sister, Cathy Gruber, and his niece, Fran Miller, and her husband, Gary Miller.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jakob and Anna Stankowitsch, his brother-in-law, Tony Gruber, and his niece, Susan Paisley.
Retirement never slowed Mike down. He enjoyed staying busy, taking on projects, spending time at the family cottage with regular Happy Hours. He found joy in life's simple pleasures, including his favorite sandwiches and a microwaved potato. Those who knew him will remember his strong work ethic, practical nature, and quiet sense of humor. Above all, they will remember the love he had for his family and the happiness he found in spending time with his only grandson.
In keeping with his wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Mike lived a life of purpose, valued family above all else, and believed in always keeping busy. His kindness, dedication, and example will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former colleagues, and the many students whose lives he touched.
