Robert (Bob) Alexander Barnes

May 20, 1941 – May 8, 2026

Robert (Bob) Alexander Barnes passed away peacefully at Cambridge Memorial Hospital on May 8, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family, just shy of his 85th birthday.

Bob was born in Campbellford, Ontario, on May 20, 1941. He was predeceased by his beloved mother, Maud, whom he loved dearly and is now reunited with, as well as his father, Robert. In his younger years, Bob spent cherished time with his many cousins, creating memories he carried with him throughout his life.

Bob shared an extraordinary love story with the love of his life, Barbara Barnes (née Tomlinson), with whom he had just celebrated 56 wonderful years of marriage. Their story began when Barbara was 24 and Bob was 26, meeting at a going-away party before Bob departed for Germany with the Canadian Armed Forces. What began as a chance meeting blossomed through heartfelt letters exchanged across the miles, allowing them to truly get to know one another despite the distance. That connection grew into a lifelong partnership built on love, devotion, and deep companionship.

Cherished and loving father of Kimberly Barnes (Mark Barber), who will always and forever miss him dearly. Bob is also remembered by his daughters Laurie Barnes and Bonnie Barnes, and their families.

Proud and loving grandfather of Alana Barnes (Richard Day) and Andrew Robinson, with whom he shared a close and special bond. They were among his greatest joys in life, and being their Papa meant the world to him.

Bob proudly served his country as a reservist with the Canadian Armed Forces from 1961 to 1978, dedicating 17 years of service, including postings to Germany on two separate occasions.

Throughout his working life, Bob drove truck for Canada Cartage before building a long career with Transport Canada at Toronto Pearson International Airport, where he worked in airfield maintenance from 1972 until his retirement in 1998. He truly enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships with the boys in airfield maintenance. Never one to sit still, Bob continued working after retirement in wildlife management services at Pearson Airport.

Bob was incredibly proud of both his military service and his career with Transport Canada, and always enjoyed sharing stories and memories from those years.

Bob will be remembered for his sense of humour, stubborn determination, and the deep love he had for his family. He loved spending time around the house, always tinkering with a project, fixing what needed repair, or finding ways to make things better. His wisdom, happy and cheerful personality, and steady presence brought comfort to those around him. Bob’s life was one of dedication, service, and loyalty—to his country, his work, and, above all, his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful team at Cambridge Memorial Hospital for the kindness, compassion, and care shown to Bob and his family.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bob’s life will be announced shortly.

Donations in memory of Bob may be made to Cambridge Memorial Hospital or to the Canadian Cancer Society, a charity that was close to his heart.
