Shirley Lorraine Thomas

1939 – 2026‍ ‍

Shirley Lorraine Thomas passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at the age of 86.‍ ‍

Born in Grahamstown, South Africa, Shirley enjoyed a happy and adventurous childhood in Gaborone, Botswana, and various parts of South Africa. From an early age, she was known for her quick wit and wonderful sense of humour, qualities that she picked up from her parents and that remained with her throughout her life.‍ ‍

In her early 20’s, Shirley moved to London, England on scholarship, to do post graduate studies as a teacher. While teaching there, she met Ron, a Canadian also studying abroad. Their meeting marked the beginning of a lifelong love story. They married in London and welcomed their first son, Michael, before moving to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where they built their life together and had two more sons, Andrew and Paul.‍ ‍

Later, the family moved to Kingston, then to Ottawa, before spending four years in northern Italy, where Shirley impressed many as a quick study in the Italian language.  In later years, Shirley and Ron moved to Quebec City and Washington, DC before settling in Kitchener, a community that Shirley truly loved.‍ ‍

Shirley was a devoted and passionate middle school teacher who was deeply admired by her students. Her kindness and genuine care left a lasting impression on many of them. Beyond the classroom, Shirley was a talented pianist, an exceptional cook, a dedicated volunteer, and a natural organizer. She had a gift for forming deep and lasting friendships, and her warmth, generosity, and radiant smile will be dearly missed.‍ ‍

She was the beloved wife and best friend of Ronald Thomas for over 64 years. Loving mother to Michael (Karen), Andrew (Shizuka), and Paul, and a devoted aunt to her niece Michelle and nephew Craig, whom she supported with great love after the loss of their parents.‍ ‍

Shirley was a cherished grandmother to Alison, Lauren, Erica, and Kai, and a proud great-grandmother to Willa and Lennon.‍ ‍

She was predeceased by her parents, Mavis (née Wilmot) and Ray Smith, and her brother, Rodney Smith.‍ ‍

Cremation has taken place.‍ ‍

In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to Doctors Without Borders Canada.‍ ‍

Messages and condolences for the family may be left in the comment box below.‍ ‍
