Patrick Albert Batte

With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Patrick Batte, aged 90, on June 27 in Kitchener. Patrick was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marjorie, his parents Ella Batte (née Nugent) and Frank Batte, brothers Frank and Ken Batte; and sister-in-law Helen MacGillivray. He is survived by his sister, Margaret Michel; his children, Paul, Marilyn, Sue and Karen; and his grandsons Lochlann and Tighe, whom he loved dearly. He will be remembered fondly by his brother-in-law Dr. William Hipwell, and sister-in-law Lynn Hipwell. He will be deeply missed by his cousins, nieces and nephews, and his longtime friends, who cherished his stories, humour, and willingness to help.

Born in Walkerville, Ontario, Pat grew up in Hamilton, the youngest of four, raised largely by his mother, Ella, a schoolteacher. He was surrounded by his very lively, loving, extended Nugent family. Pat often shared memories of his many Nugent aunts, uncles and cousins. Perhaps being an educator’s son contributed to his love of reading and endless curiosity about world events. Pat began his working life delivering newspapers as a young boy, and he never stopped working until his retirement from the Record in systems maintenance. He trained early as a linotype apprentice, leading to a career at newspapers in Sudbury, Hamilton, and finally Kitchener, taking pride in the solutions he found which contributed to the publication of a daily newspaper. For many years, he also ran his own business, PB Typesetting.

Smart, kind, and private by nature, he was an avid DIYer who could fix virtually anything, often making ingenious adjustments as he worked. Self-taught, he acted as plumber, electrician and carpenter, renovating an older home, building a cottage, decks, and installing wood floors.

Pat was a voracious reader who loved to follow politics and business news, always ready for a thorough discussion. He leaves a legacy of generosity, sharp wit, work ethic, and a confidence in his ability to meet challenges. His thoughtful nature, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication to family and friends will be remembered always. His spirit lives on in the memories and hearts of his family and friends, and in the spaces he created.

As Pat’s family, we are grateful to PSWs Valentine, Elba and Esther, whose care enabled Dad to live independently in his home; the rehabilitation staff at St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph; and the loving staff at Winston Park, whose care and compassion made Dad’s final months comfortable and dignified.

According to Pat’s wishes, cremation has taken place. His celebration of life will be announced, and interment will be at Woodland Cemetery.

Thank you for everything, Dad. We miss you tremendously. We will love you always.
